Q. -
Is it okay to pet a guide dog in harness?
A. - No. Though it might be tempting to pet a dog guide, remember that this dog is doing a very important job and needs to concentrate. A dog guide is responsible for guiding someone who cannot see to keep them safe, so the dog should never be distracted.
Q. -
Are all people who use dog guides totally blind?
A. - No. Some people who use dog guides may have good central vision -- it's the peripheral vision needed for safe travel that they may lack.
Q. - Are dog guides allowed in all public places?
A. - The American Disabilities Act and other state laws allow dog guides to escort their handlers anywhere the general public is allowed, including stores, restaurants, theatres, taxis, buses, hotels and office buildings. The only time a facility can require the separation of a dog guide from its owner is when the dog's presence fundamentally alters or endangers the goods or services of the facility -or- jeopardizes public use of the facility. For example, at a zoo the animals in captivity might react to the presence of a dog.
