| On February 9th, strange but happy sounds could be heard into the wee hours of the morning when the Keystone Kids met for the first ever KBA Lock-In. Ten energetic teenagers participated in the overnight activity.
Everyone met at Steese’s Restaurant in Grove City for a wonderful dinner and tour of their ice cream factory. Thanks to Steese’s for their wonderful support for our program and yummy ice cream treats! We learned all about how ice cream is made from Bob Steese, Ginny Richardson and Jim Richardson. Some comments overheard were: “Man, I never stood in a freezer before and it is SOOO cold!” and “This is the best drumstick I’ve ever eaten!” and “An ice cream cone is called a drumstick? I thought that was chicken.”
Then it was back to KBA for many other fun events. We made our own homemade ice cream and brownies. We watched movies (the favorite movie was a descriptive video of “Babe”) and snacked on chips and pop. Anna Craig led the assembly line for filling the candy bags to be given at a conference for teachers in April and Kimberly Paglia kept the sub sandwich assembly line going at top speed. (The sandwiches were sold as a fundraiser for the Keystone Kids.) Finger-painting, valentine crafts and a board game kept kids busy throughout the night. (A few managed to catch a couple hours of sleep and we won’t mention the names of those who snored….) Thanks to Tony and Kimberly Paglia for bringing the fun assortment of musical instruments for everyone to try out. Early Saturday morning everyone awoke to the aroma of Tony’s yummy pancakes! Then it was time to pack up, clean up, go home, and get some real sleep!
Thanks to our volunteers: Anna and Dick Craig, Tony and Kimberly Paglia, Nik Preece, and Loni Miller.
Keystone Kids is a group for children who have visual impairments.
The skills taught during our activities are critically important
for the future success of any student with a visual loss. Our next
activity will be bowling and snacks on Saturday, March 10. Call
Kimberly Paglia at 347-5501 for more information on how to join
or help.
